Outrageously recommended movies
In no particular order. Updated: 9 September 2004

Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky)

Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Avoid the American remake, at least until you've seen this.

Miracle Mile
Included here despite quite a few weaknesses. Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

Die zweite heimat (Edgar Reitz)
Hard to find, but from what I've heard it is released on DVD in 2004.

2001 - A space odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)
All his movies are excellent, I find this the most shining.

More may be added later. See Amazon and Internet Movie Database for reviews and more information on the movies.

Not top 5, but still almost incredibly recommended:

Dead Man (1995) (Jim Jarmusch)

The Emigrants (1971)/The New Land (1972) (Jan Troell)

Riget (The Kingdom) (1994)/Riget II (1997) (Lars von Trier)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) (Terry Gilliam/Terry Jones)

La dolce vita (1960) (Federico Fellini)

Fanny & Alexander (1982) (Ingmar Bergman)

Doctor Zhivago (1965) (David Lean)

Magnolia (1999) (Paul Thomas Anderson)

Not as recommended as those above. Sublime anyway:

Fitzcarraldo (1982) (Werner Herzog)

Paths of Glory (1957) (Stanley Kubrick)

Roma (1972) (Federico Fellini)
Apparently with Banco's vocalist Francesco di Giacomo in a small role!

Buffalo '66 (1998) (Vincent Gallo)

Hundstage (2001) (Ullrich Seidl)

The Pianist (2002) (Roman Polanski)

Twelve Monkeys (1995) (Terry Gilliam)

Mulholland Drive (2001) (David Lynch)

Twin Peaks (the TV-series, not the movie) (David Lynch)

Andrei Rublyov (1969) (Andrei Tarkovsky)

Casablanca (1942) (Michael Curtiz)

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) (David Lean)

Chungking Express (1994) (Kar Wai Wong)
